Virpazar, Montenegro: The Gateway Village to Lake Skadar

Virpazar is where most trips to Lake Skadar begin. It is a small village with an outsized role, and understanding what it offers, and what it leaves out, makes planning a day on the lake much easier.

What is Virpazar?

Virpazar is a small village built around a stone bridge and a cluster of cafes, at the point where the fertile Crmnica plain meets Lake Skadar. It grew up as a market town and river port, and the name itself carries that history of trade. Today it is the busiest tourist hub on the Montenegrin side of the lake, with guesthouses, restaurants and the largest concentration of boat operators anywhere on the water.

Just outside the village, the Lesendro fortress sits on a spit of land beside the causeway where the road and railway cross the lake. It once guarded this strategic narrows, and along with the bridge and the market it is one of the things Virpazar is best known for.

How do you get to Virpazar?

Virpazar is the most accessible spot on Lake Skadar because it lies directly on the main Bar to Podgorica route. Drivers reach it in well under an hour from either the capital, Podgorica, or the coast at Bar, and there is parking beside the village. It is also one of the very few lake villages served by train: the Bar to Podgorica railway stops here, so you can arrive without a car.

What is there to do in Virpazar?

Virpazar works well as a base for a day on and around the lake. The main draw is the water itself, and boat tours leave from the village throughout the season. On land, you can walk out toward the Lesendro fortress, browse the small village market for local honey, cheese and cured meats, and take a slow coffee at a cafe by the old bridge.

Virpazar also sits at the edge of the Crmnica region, Montenegro's best-known red-wine district, so a tasting at a small family cellar is easy to add to the day. Quiet walking trails follow the shoreline and the reed-lined channels, and the surrounding hills open up wide views over the northwestern arm of the lake.

Should you start a boat tour from Virpazar or Rijeka Crnojevica?

Many boat tours depart from Virpazar, and it is a perfectly good place to get on the water. It is worth knowing, though, that tours from Virpazar head straight out onto the open lake. Our own tours instead leave from the quieter village of Rijeka Crnojevica, a short distance to the north.

Starting from Rijeka Crnojevica adds around 15 kilometres of river canyon before the lake opens up, winding past stone bridges, reed banks and the famous Pavlova Strana horseshoe bend. When is the best time to visit Virpazar?

The season on Lake Skadar runs from April to October, and that is when Virpazar is at its liveliest. Late spring and early summer bring the white water lilies that carpet the shallow bays, while spring and autumn are the best windows for birdwatching, with the lake home to more than 280 recorded species, including the Dalmatian pelican.
