A Short History
Rijeka Crnojevića carries the name of the Crnojević dynasty, the medieval rulers who made nearby Cetinje the heart of Montenegro. In the 15th century the family held power across this region, and the river became a trade artery between the lake and the interior.
The village peaked in the 19th century as a busy river port and market town under King Nikola. Goods moved by boat between the lake and Cetinje. Its handsome stone houses and the old arched bridge date from that era. The arched stone bridge over the river, built in the 19th century, still stands as the village's landmark. Today the trade is gone and the village is quiet, which is much of its charm.
The Crnojevića River and Canyon
The river is the reason to come. From the village it winds through a canyon for about 15 kilometres before opening into the lake. The water is calm and mirror-still in the morning, reflecting the canyon walls and the old stone bridges that arch across it.
In summer the channels fill with white water lilies, and herons work the reeds along the banks. This stretch is what makes a tour from Rijeka Crnojevića different. Tours that leave from Virpazar head straight onto the open lake and never see the canyon. The full comparison is in Rijeka Crnojevića vs Virpazar.
Pavlova Strana Viewpoint
The single most photographed view on Lake Skadar sits above the village. Pavlova Strana is a roadside viewpoint on the Cetinje road. It looks down on a near-perfect horseshoe bend of the Crnojevića River as it loops toward the lake.
You reach it by car, no boat required, on the way in or out of the village. Morning and late afternoon give the best light. It takes ten minutes and rewards you with the image most people associate with the lake. Pair it with a boat tour for the same scenery from the water.
Things to Do
Rijeka Crnojevića rewards a slow visit.
- Take a boat tour. The main event. Tours start at the village dock and follow the canyon into the lake.
- Stop at Pavlova Strana. The horseshoe-bend viewpoint above the village.
- Walk the old bridge. The 19th-century stone arch is the village's centrepiece.
- Eat by the river. A handful of family konobas serve lake fish and local dishes on the waterfront.
- Watch the birds. Herons and other waterbirds feed in the channels right by the village.
Where to Eat
The village has a small cluster of traditional konobas along the river. They serve freshly caught lake fish such as carp and bleak, smoked or grilled, alongside Montenegrin staples. Eating here, with the river in front of you, is part of the experience. For a fuller rundown of lakeside dining, see where to eat at Lake Skadar.
How to Get There
Rijeka Crnojevića sits about 25 minutes from Podgorica and 20 from Cetinje by car. From the coast, Kotor and Budva are both around 50 minutes over the mountains via Cetinje. There is no direct public transport to the village, so a car or a transfer is the practical way in. Buses and the train reach Virpazar instead. Full routes and times are in the how to get to Lake Skadar guide.

The canyon below Rijeka Crnojevića is the part of Lake Skadar that most visitors miss. The 40-minute Canyon Tour glides under the old stone bridges from the village dock, and longer tours carry on into the lake. Every tour is private with Captain Dusko, who was raised on these waters and has guided them for over 15 years.
